GOLD TESTER B&C is built on a single ultrasonic time-of-flight measurement — timing how long a pulse takes to travel through the metal. The same physical reading can be configured two ways: fix the sound velocity to solve for thickness, or fix the thickness to solve for sound velocity. These are two applications of one underlying principle, not two independent detection technologies.
With the item's certified thickness entered, the instrument solves for sound velocity. Every metal conducts sound at its own signature velocity — pure gold reads a highly consistent ~3240 m/s, while tungsten, brass, lead and steel each read distinctly different. This is the configuration used to verify material identity on a known-dimension item.

GOLD TESTER B&C ships with two probes as standard — between them, these cover the great majority of bars and coins encountered on a typical counter or vault floor. A measurement requires a position where the item's upper and lower surfaces are flat and parallel; curved surfaces (such as a solid cylinder) and irregular or recycled scrap generally cannot be measured reliably.
